Electrical Installation

Step-by-step for installing an electric tankless water heater

TOOLS TO HAVE
Screwdriver
Pliers
Wire cutter
Drill
Mat knife
Wire fasteners (secure to the wall)
Wire connectors (nuts for #10-12 gauge)

What To Do

Use the wire recommended by the manufacturer. The wire from your old tank heater is probably not the right gauge, so you will need new wiring. For the 80-amp heater this means two pair with grounds - one pair for each breaker.

Circuit panels are commonly rated for 200 amps. You don’t want to overload, so be sure to find out.

To install new breakers throw the main breaker to off and remove cover. Install new breakers that are the same style as existing ones. These are double breakers you are installing - they take two slots each in the panel.

To install, you will usually find that they are slipped under a small lip in the panel frame and then pushed into place.

Make sure new breakers are off.

Strip wires according to instructions (be careful not to cut any copper strands) and insert one pair into each breaker. Tighten screws.

Attach ground (uninsulated or green) to same bar as other ground wires.

Punch out knock-outs in panel cover that match new breakers and reinstall cover.

Next run wires from panel to the heater box.

Connect wires to tankless heater terminals, as your manual instructs. You can throw the main breaker on, if you like, but leave new breakers turned off for now.

You have completed the electrical part of this project.
